In a bizarre twist...
Rather than ANet copying Blizzard, which we all know must be true because these days putting a game online means you're copying WoW, Blizzard has decided to copy ANet by suggesting the game they originally marketed as being designed for competition may go through a process of being dumbed down.
Considering that original developer quotes highlighted the fact that competitive play and e-sports were the primary goal of the game, and they were willing to lose sales to achieve this, this is silly. SC2 already has a large number of additions that make it much easier to play (automining, MBS, autosurround, massively improved unit AI), and all detract from the amount of skill required to be a strong player. You don't need to make a game easier for the new players - as long as it's alluring enough for them to try it out, what's the problem? Weak players can play each other (that's what BNet is for), the ones who are more capable can go higher, and so on. The competitive community is not going to like this announcement because it reflects an unpleasant change in direction.
The good thing is that considering the game should be moddable, the competitive scene will be able to adjust the game (if required, nothing is finalized). That begs the question of why any sort of 'selling out' to the mediocre masses is needed, because the weak players can always just make a DotA map and pretend to be good at something! Jokes aside, this is the case in BW: the noobs play fastest/BGH while the better players are mainly on KeSPA maps, or maps produced by some of the mapping communities. The game didn't need to be made easier because it was playable at all levels and your ability decided what level you played at.
Thoughts?
And yes I know the game is still very far from actual release, I'm talking about the implications of the announcement. Yes, I also know that something like this isn't necessarily set in stone because it's a random public announcement.

For a second there I thought you were going to talk about WoW. Then I realized I don't care because Runes is so superior.
Then I read this stuff about this game-to-be full of fluff. How sad.

Competitive play is the only thing that makes Starcraft stand out as a good game, take that away and you have a mediocre sequel.
Basically, Avarre is a huge tourneyfag ;D!

You do know that nowadays developers don't make challenging games. They make "casual" games, like Spore or Little Big Planet.
Hell, even Portal is harder than a lot of those games. And it's mostly a logical game.
This looks a lot like PC -> console or Console = PC (same time) games. On consoles they often get autoaim and the stuff... "Oh noes, we have a controller totally unsuitable for certain games, make it easier :[". And $ makes developers change game.
I just hope it's single-player only.

This makes me want to cry on so many levels. All my friends used to bitch about how whenever we play multiplayer we have to take the time to start mining, make SCVs/Drones/Probes, set up your base, etc. etc....sometimes I hate my friends.
At least they'll be happy.

Maybe Anet and Blizzard can just merge, form a new company, and no one has to copy anyone.
